The students at our school are from a variety of backgrounds - white, black, Hispanic, Asian - and have a variety of financial backgrounds, from impoverished and homeless to wealthy. Some have ADD or ADHD. Other students have issues with depression and low self-esteem. Still others are underachievers and need special motivation in order to help them perform at their top level. These students work hard despite their disadvantages and I want to be sure they have everything they need in order to be a success in school.
My seventh grade students will each need a copy of the novel, The Martian. They will be reading the novel in my reading class while doing hands-on activities in Science that relate to life on Mars. I will help them by building background, understanding vocabulary, and using the words in context. Then they will be able to apply those skills with their Science teachers.
Our school works to achieve cross-curricular learning so that students can better retain the information learned and see/hear it more frequently.
They are going to have a great learning experience with this reading project and activity in Science class. They will be able to also take away skills that will help them understand sustainability and innovation by creating a Mars civilization.
