Science and Nonfiction Class Library for Curious Readers!

My students need a nonfiction class library, including 45 books with a focus on science.

My Students

Having a classroom library is empowering to both students and teachers alike. As a new teacher to third grade, I wish to start the school year with highly interesting nonfiction (heavy in science) to channel their energy immediately into literacy.

I teach 25 wonderfully diverse third graders at an achieving lower income Title I school in California.

From Autistic to gifted children, they are the perfect representation of our community. And at this critically important age, they are both eager to learn and able to absorb information like sponges, therefore a crucial need for quality nonfiction.

My Project

Do you remember the first day of the school year and how exciting it was for your teacher to place a tub of new books in which to choose from? I want to duplicate this experience for my class. I have chosen nonfiction for the accessibility and high interest with a focus on science and the natural world. Some titles include "Boy, We Were Wrong about Dinosaurs!”, “The ABC's of Habitats" and "A Lime, a Mime, a Pool of Slime". All of the books are new, certain to engage all readers and promote curiosity about science.

Finally, I wish to emphasize that the experiences created by a nonfiction classroom library go far beyond creating student interest in reading - as for my fragile population; they create a "buy-in" to school itself.

And based on past success with DonorsChoose.org, it is extremely motivating to a classroom when a complete stranger donates so generously. It reinforces the ideas of giving, respect and how our entire community values their education. We thank you for your consideration!
