Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are living in a very HIGH tech world! I want to give my students opportunities for the 21st Century! How can I keep today's kids engaged in the classroom? This is every teacher's daily challenge, and a big part of the answer is technology.
My students attend school in the largest and one of the poorest school districts in the state.
The school accommodates twice as many students as it was originally built to house in the 1940's. Where there was once playground, there are now portable classrooms. The electricity is outdated, the cafeteria overcrowded, but the students have fantastic attendance because often, coming to school is a treat over staying home. Over 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced price lunch and enjoy two meals a day at school, often, the only two meals of the day. Many of our students live in multiple family homes or subsidized apartments. Each family looks at their child as the one who will be the first to graduate high school, the first to go on to college. Our families are 'American Dream' families and their children hard working believers who need help launching them in the right direction and preparing them to persevere and succeed despite economic disadvantages.
My Project
My Project: These Kindle Fires will be used to make their daily math lessons and concepts much more meaningful. Their eyes literally light up when they get to work on the Kindle. I have brought in my own Kindle to use during their math (and science) time and they absolutely love it. By using this Kindle during math, they will increase their operations and algebraic thinking by allowing them to practice math facts. They will also be developing a strong sense of place value. They will aid them in attaining the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice and the Standards for Mathematical Content.
This technology helps me to reach very diverse learning needs as each student can work on his or her own level.
The Kindles also serves as an excellent motivational tool. Every kid wants to work on the Kindle. They think they're playing, but I know they are learning!
