Our school is a public Montessori school in Alaska. Our teaching philosophy supports following the child. We strive to create a learning environment that is prepared for and centered around all of our children's interests. It is our job to help spark curiosity within our students so that they may learn to love learning. Our goal is to help mold each of our children to be life-long learners.
Our students are extraordinary because they are not afraid to be creative, to be curious, to question the world around them, to care for one another, to stand up for themselves and their peers, or to push themselves beyond their frustrations.
Due to our school being Montessori, we spend three full school years together. We have our kids from first through third grade. We have more than a teacher-student relationship; our classes become a family.
Our school serves many military families. We understand what it takes to nurture the academic and social-emotional needs of these students and families during deployment and all transitions they may experience. Our philosophy allows for military students to quickly adjust to our learning style and gives them the opportunity to explore the world around them.
My Project
This project was created specifically for math and science resources for our public Montessori classroom. Currently we have 26 students, grades 1-3, who are learning to become independent, inquiry based learners through the use of hands-on, conceptual, materials that can be used for years.
Over the last 7 years our classroom resources have been used heavily which means that pieces get broken or go missing; this project was created to help replace or fill some of our current classroom materials needs.
Our current Fraction Stix material, which is a hands-on manipulative that helps students understand fractions conceptually, is missing several pieces. We learn about the value of coins and the importance of earning and saving money each year; this school year we will be learning how to order from a restaurant and the skill of exchanging money. The Market Math book will give the children ample opportunity to practice these skills before we go to a local restaurant to put our skills into practice. Every spring we raise butterflies in our classroom but currently we do not have any additional resources to support the students' exploration of these insects. The Magnetic Butterfly Life Cycle and Butterfly Life Cycle paperweight will give the kids another opportunity to manipulate, explore and learn more about the nature of this cycle of life.
