Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students come from low-income households in a very urban community in North Carolina. My school is Title I where almost all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Students may be facing tough situations at home, financial, social, or physical.
Yet, every day, they come to school ready and eager to learn.
They are greeted by passionate and caring teachers that put their heart and soul into every lesson they teach, academic and life lessons. I feel lucky to work with these teachers and students daily.
My Project
Part of my job is to work with kindergarten, first and second grade to enrich the curriculum and nurture critical thinking. One way that I do this is to supplement the science curriculum with various thinking skills like divergent and convergent thinking.
The books selected have a strong connection to each grade level's science curriculum and can be used to engage students, stimulate thought and jump start future learning.
Humans learn naturally through storytelling. Help my students learn about the states of matter through Snowballs by Lois Ehlert or living and nonliving things by reading Alexander and the Wind Up Mouse by Leo Lionni. These books will not only help them learn science concepts, it will prepare them to think deeply and critically about the world around them.
