My students need 26 copies of the book entitled: "Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks", 1 case of paper, and an audiobook to enhance literacy in science.

My students are eager to learn more about real-life applications of modern day science while enhancing their academic vocabulary.
Rarely does a book comes along that is so rich in life connections and so well-written that a class can use it in both English/Language Arts and Science.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which tells the story of the founding of the HeLa cell line, is one such book. My middle school students begin the year reading years below grade level. We are currently working hard to enhance literacy in science. This text will be used to build the academic vocabulary and literacy skills needed for Science and English/language arts.
For years, I've had a dream of finding a wonderful nonfiction text to use for shared reading throughout the year. Because my classroom contains students that read below grade level, reluctant readers and students with very interrupted schooling, this book is the perfect tool that will engage all of my students. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the story of the HeLa cell line which was vital in developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and many other major medical advances. Henrietta Lacks, the woman who unknowingly donated her cells to create this line, died more than 50 years ago. The story of her life and the impact of her legacy on surviving family members is gripping, thought-provoking, and brilliantly connected to a variety of key topics from the middle school curriculum. We need 26 hard copies, 1 sound recording and 1 case of paper.
This book---a challenging text which takes the reader on a journey through civil rights, cancer research, modern medicine, and other topics---will provide my students with a shared reading experience that could impact achievement in many classes for years to come.
