This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a unique group of students. One third of my students are enrolled in a pre-health academy that has requirements for economical or educational disadvantage. The students are interested in going into the healthcare industry and we help provide them the support to get there. They are taking challenging courses and volunteer outside of school with local health oriented organizations.
The other two thirds of my students are a random sampling of students from our high school, which is a Title I, low income, rural CA farming community with a high minority population.
We make sure that every student in our school gets the opportunity to take the Lab Science College Preparatory Biology course their Freshman or Sophomore year. Our goal is to provide them all the opportunity to be successful.
My students are eager to learn and most of them look forward to learning about life sciences and see the application to their daily lives.
My Project
I would like the be able to give my classes (160 students) the ability to design and print their own models of the human body, organs, cellular models and molecular models. 3D printing takes hours and having multiple printers will give my students the ability to print their own designs vs watching 1 students design being printed. These specific printers are inexpensive, but have a lot of very good qualities and make it easy to use and get working models from.
The ability for students to understand 3D design and modeling is a skill that has applications in every field of student and is a 21st century skill that will help students in their studies and employment in the future.
Science classes are great places for students to learn how to 3D print and design because many of the pre-made models are expensive and hard to have enough for each student to use on a regular basis.
Combine the 3D printing and design with VR and we have a whole ecosystem for students to be able to create and develop their own designs and models.
