I am very dedicated to the area of teaching. I believe preparing our students for the future is vitally important so that our world will continue to thrive. I am very confident in teaching all areas of the South Carolina third grade curriculum, however, Science tends to be the hardest subject for students to understand. I have worked hard on including hands on activities as well as other literature into my science curriculum. When I incorporate the science literature into the curriculum, I unfortunately only have one copy for the entire class. I am in desperate need to have class sets of nonfiction science literature to teach my students. We have four main science areas we have to teach in third grade and they are Structures of Life, Earth Materials, Water and Sound. Within these areas, we cover a multitude of topics such as deserts, volcanoes, seeds and the water cycle just to name a few. I would love to be able to order class sets of the Magic School Bus series for my students. I would like to order 20 copies per title, being that I have 19 students and I could have the extra copy. This would work for my future classes as well, because my class number normally does not exceed 20. Having these books will benefit my students because our standardized test at the end of the year in Science focuses mainly on nonfiction passages. By using nonfiction books, it will allow me to incorporate science within the total curriculum. I will also use these books in my Reading/Literature unit as well. I teach 100% African American children at an urban school in Charleston,SC. My school is Title I and we have a great need. Our Science PACT scores (state standardized test) have been low and last year in 3rd grade, only 9.4% of the students scored Proficient or Advanced. I need to get to work on this. I can not just stand by and let this happen, but I need help. I am asking that you please help the children become better at science. In order to make this happen,it will take several steps. My first step begins with you! I am asking that a donor fund several class sets of the Magic School Bus series for my class. I am asking for 20 copies of each title I have listed below. I have 19 students, but the extra copy will be for me. The titles are all Magic School Bus books and they are as follows: The Magic School Bus- Wet All Over The Magic School Bus- At the Waterworks The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten (Food Chains) The Magic School Bus- Inside the Earth The Magic School Bus Blows its Top: A Book about Volcanoes The Magic School Bus Plants Seeds Again, I would just like to say that my students are in desperate need for nonfiction titles that are tied to Science and can be incorporated into the total curriculum. My students need to know the Science is fun and that there are fun ways to learn about science. Please help me make this a reality for my students. I would like to thank you for your consideration in advance.
