Mr. Rivas from Charlotte NC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 7 Science lab materials, including a Centripetal Force Apparatus and a Population Density and Biomass Study Kit.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our class has big goals and every day they work hard to learn about the science that governs our lives whether it be motion, velocity, and force with Physics or the affects of acid rain, emissions, habitat destruction, and disease on people across America and the world.
My students attend a magnet school in North Carolina that is accomplishing amazing feats both in the classroom and outside.
Despite being a high poverty and focus school, the students are coming every day to learn and understand the world around them. They are knocking down barriers and achieving some of the highest test scores in the state, but they are desperate for even more challenging work that will help take them to the next level of understanding as they prepare to be successful in college and life. They are amazing students and are on pace to make global impacts.
I have requested several different lab materials that will allow my students to take the theories and concepts of Environmental Science and Physics and apply them at a higher level. These lab materials will give students a chance to perform hands on analysis on topics like centripetal force and acceleration, population growth and the affects of density, the affects of acid rain, and several different other topics. Many of these materials can be used again and again and will help students at my school for years to come. It has been shown that labs allow students to increase their comprehension and understanding, and these lab components will give students a hands on visual that actually allows them to see the affects of changing radius or speed on centripetal force instead of just calculating it on paper. I have seen students grapple with tough concepts like this, but I have also seen how labs open up students eyes and create long term connections in their mind.
Your donations will help over 60 students this year and hundreds of students over the next few years learn and apply science through engaging, interesting, and challenging labs.
It allows for students to go beyond a book, PowerPoint, or video and find out for themselves the problems acid rain cause on soil fertility or how momentum and force change with velocity and acceleration. Students need these opportunities to learn and be better prepared for future sciences in school, college, and life.
