Mrs. White from Lake Charles LA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

SCI-PORT Field Trip (Louisiana's Science Center)

My students need financial aid for transportation to and from Sci-Port which provides wonderful hands-on learning workshops in science, space science and technology.

My Students

My students are always eager to learn chemistry lab techniques, collect and analyze data which provides relevant application of concepts, and have a passion for science inquiry. Experiences outside the classroom can reiterate these concepts. "...Teach a man to fish & you'll feed him for a lifetime"

I am truly blessed to teach such a diverse group of students who build off of each other strengths; students who are actively involved in music, student government, athletics, academic clubs & competitions.

We also offer an amazing RTI (Response to intervention) program which provides peer tutoring, individualized teacher assistance & counseling services twice a week during school hours for at-risk students. Our school has almost 2000 students & we offer a wide variety of AP & Gifted courses. My students & I started an ACS affiliated Chemistry Club last year with the goal of providing students opportunities to experience science beyond the normal classroom setting. Students make time after school to perform chemistry experiments & participate in many other science activities. Students also volunteer to work the annual Chem Expo which provides science demonstrations & activities for 6th grade students.

My Project

Sci-Port provides an educational environment for students to explore & participate in experiments, demonstrations & many activities that center around mathematics, science and technology. The opportunity to dissect a shark or safely watch chemistry demonstrations that are not normally available in the public school setting are just examples of some of the activities that Sci-Port offers during school visits. Sci-Port's 290+ exhibits in nine galleries, which includes the worlds first open-access, interactive, laser Space Dome Planetarium provide students a tremendous opportunity to experience hands-on activities in life science, physical science, earth science, space science, robotics & mathematics. IMAX dome theater film included. Students will take pictures and document their activities throughout the field-trip by creating an 11 x 17 digital scrapbook collage with explanations of their favorite activities. Color printed by our media center & displayed in class hallway.

Only one of my students has had the opportunity to visit Sci-Port, which is over 3 hours away.

This student first suggested that we take this field-trip because she had such a wonderful experience. In order to increase student interest in science the more opportunities students have to expound their knowledge & interact with the wonders of science the more likely they will develop a true passion & further their education in the science field. Sci-Port will help foster such aspirations.
