Help me give my students the opportunity to read "The One and Only Ivan" book - and related books - by providing books for every classroom to read together, encouraging discussion and high interest participation.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students come from a low-income area meaning more than half qualify for free/reduced lunch and move frequently. Resources at home are often limited and our children lack prior knowledge and previous experiences to relate to what they are learning.
Providing resources to relate to information and help our students make connections leads to a more meaningful education.
Through relationships, family engagement, and creating a positive learning environment, we provide for these students as we continue to foster their growth.
My Project
My entire school of students will build their literacy with real world relationships as every class in the building reads the same book, "The One and Only Ivan." This project includes the novel in English (and a few copies in Spanish) and a picture book version for younger grades.
By ALL students sharing in one story, families and the school will be able to discuss as a community, increasing interest in reading, comprehension skills, and moving beyond the text.
This particular story is fiction, but based on a true story of a gorilla that lived the end of his life in a nearby zoo. Students will find a true life connection with this book.
As a sequel to the novel is coming out this summer, hopefully students will be further encouraged to continue reading and dive deeper into this subject.
Literacy skills and an interest in the world around them are vital skills for our students!
