This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are 7th and 8th graders struggling to read at the K-1st grade level. Each morning they attend a 90 minute literacy block focused entirely on raising their reading levels 1.5 years in one year. We are already on our way as I see improvement with each passing day!

My students are a small group of 7th and 8th graders.

They are scholars at a brand new takeover charter school that took the place of what last year was the 2nd lowest performing elementary school in our city in Louisiana. We are the lowest level literacy class in the middle school and we all receive special education services. Our negative behaviors increase and our motivation decreases in other classes as we struggle to access material at such a higher level than our current functioning. Each day we work on sight words, phonics, and guided reading because the good news is we all are motivated to read better. We want to improve and work hard everyday so that we can reach our goals.

My Project

Our guided and independent reading library is very small due to the limited number of books available in a middle school that are on the K-1 reading level. Guided and independent reading is a huge component of a balanced literacy program. We need to motivate our students to take books home, to read each day, and to challenge themselves through books. These books will drastically increase the selection in out library and help the students reach their reading goals. Included are some of the top children's' books like The Giving Tree, The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar, and a variety of Dr. Seuss books. These will grasp my students' interest and keep them reading.

If you cannot read past the 1st grade level it is extremely difficult to be successful in middle and high school.

These students already have learning challenges based on their IEPs, we need to provide them with the tools they need in order to be successful. They need to improve their reading, they want to improve their reading, and I am committed to making this happen!
