This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are gifted and talented fifth graders. Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood in downtown Las Vegas. Many of them speak English as a second language and come from very large families.

These gifted and talented students, while low-income and English language learners are some of the most driven, enthusiastic, and hard-working young people I know.

My students often express to me that school is their favorite part of the day. They feel safe and secure in the classroom and look forward to attending class each day. It is important to me to provide them with an exceptional learning environment, equipped with exceptional tools and resources.

My Project

Starting a new school year is a costly endeavor for teachers. In a low-income school, the teacher must assume that students will arrive without basic supplies such as folders, colored pencils, and notebooks. Buying these supplies for 30+ students, in addition to the necessary bulletin board and various upkeep supplies for a school year, is a massive financial burden on teachers.

When my students enter my room in August and see that their supply needs have already been met, they will begin the school year with confidence.

They will quickly learn that their teacher is on their side and wants them to succeed. In addition to the start-up supplies I have requested, I have asked for many items that tend to run out throughout a school year, such as patterned printer paper, scissors, highlighters, bulletin board paper, borders, and letters, and pencil boxes.

Finally, I have requested a cordless sweeper and 2 fans for the classroom. In past years, my students and I have longed for something to quickly sweep up the frequent pencil shaving accidents and paper scraps that are inevitable in an elementary classroom. As for the fans, our classroom is located in the heart of Las Vegas, and the temperature can climb above 110 degrees. While we have air conditioning, sometimes it is simply not enough to cool 30+ bodies packed into one classroom. Your donation would not only provide supplies to my students but comfort as well!
