Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bully Free Zone, that's the slogan that labels the walls at our school. We have a Bully Patrol and every classroom has its own Bully bucket so students can confidently submit the names of bullying incidents. The movie would build on the Bully Free zone policy that our school adheres to.
Our students are kids in grade 5-8th.
We are 98% Latino and 96% below poverty rate. The school is located on the Southeast side of Chicago, a part of the city that was once a thriving mill town. Now the Mills are gone and it's basically a vast wasteland. No jobs, no culture, no movie theater. The majority of our students never venture over and beyond the bridges of the Southeast side. Our students have hearts of gold and always give to the utmost of their ability. We are a school that takes great pride in our students.
My Project
Exposing the students to the after effects of bullying can leave a lasting impression, leaving them knowing that it can destroy a child's life. Our school currently has a Bully Patrol. It's made up of students from 7th and 8th grade. They advocate for each and every student here at our school. Each classroom has its own Bully Bucket, the Bully Patrol checks the buckets once a week for names. If a students name appears more than once in the bucket, that student is summoned to the Bully Patrol. It's kind of like a peer jury. We would like to enhance our Bully Free zone program by giving our students the opportunity to view the movie "Bully". We would like to take 5th through 8th grade. We are requesting 500 tickets and 10 buses to attend this performance. Our students will learn to be more compassionate, understanding and embrace each others differences. I hope that this movie will inspire students to stand up for the child that is being bullied thus taking the power away from the bully.
By exposing our entire middle school to the movie "Bully," our students will experience the repercussions of bullying together.
After viewing the movie our school plans on having an assembly to discuss the movie and how our school can expand on our Bully Free Zone school. The assembly will be facilitated by the Bully Patrol. By allowing the students to run this program they take ownership and become empowered. We want the whole school to be a safe and supported environment.
