A day in Mrs. Hughes' classroom is always an adventure. It is a melting pot of learning styles from struggling learners to the highly gifted. We are a Title l school that is overwhelmed with meeting the academic and personal daily needs within our community. My students come from a rural area and low socioeconomic backgrounds, though they come to school ready and eager to learn.
I teach a large number of students who need access to enrichment opportunities beyond what our county is able to provide.
One of my goals is to increase their reading proficiency to help them succeed in school and in life. In turn, I hope to provide learning experiences that will develop a passion for learning beyond the classroom. In our room, we use a mixture of flexible grouping to promote academic success in reading skills and mathematical thinking.
My Project
As part of a Title I school, we are limited in what we are allowed to ask for from parents on school supply lists.
Even after school supplies are provided, they are rarely replenished as the year progresses.
This leaves a heavy burden on teachers to provide the basic necessities students require to be successful for the majority of the school year.
Providing basic school supplies is one small part of weekly and monthly expenses that teachers spend on their classrooms. Prize boxes, treat jars, rewards for good behavior- the list goes on!
My students will greatly benefit from having a well-equipped classroom that's ready to learn from day one. The glue sticks, erasers, construction paper, dry-erase markers, paper, folders, and card stock will make that wish a reality!
