This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a 5th-grade teacher in an urban school district. Due to our poverty level, we are a Title I school. Ultimately my students all receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
Despite the challenging situation my students may have at home they come to school ready to learn.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire the students to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
All of my students want to learn but have a hard time showing what they know. Why you ask? My students are mostly school-dependent. They depend on us for food, safety, shelter, and socialization. School supplies are not a necessity when it comes to whether there is food on the table.
School supplies like pencils are in a high demand in my classroom.
Often times I have students come to me each day needing to borrow a pencil. Last year alone I supplied my students with over 1,000 pencils that I had bought at the beginning of the year. It is the half way through the school year and we are already running low. I have 50 students in total and have to make copies for them weekly, which requires a lot of paper. I want to continue to inspire my students and provide them with the best education and tools they need but I need the supplies to do that.
