I work at a Title I elementary school teaching second grade. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and are at a wide range of different reading levels. I have some students who come to school ready to learn and I have others who come to school ready to be loved. They are a unique bunch of kids and are really sweet. I anticipate that this year will be a great year full of many adventures and lots of growth!
Sometimes teaching is not just about academics and the teachers at my school know this on a daily basis.
For some children, the classroom teacher is their only form of stability and love in their lives and academics may not be a priority for them.
On a daily basis, I am not only worrying about if the kids are learning but how some of the students are doing emotionally. Some of my students in second grade have seen much more in their lives than some people have ever seen. Giving the students a place to feel safe and loved is just as important to me as giving them a place to learn.
My Project
These materials will be replacing broken, well-loved, and "lost" school supplies. We go through a lot of school supplies with our project-based learning, our interactive engagement lessons, and just overall daily use in second grade. These materials will help in our reading lessons using the fingers and magnifying glasses to do Close Reading (we do this across curriculums). The plastic sleeves and dry erase will be used in math as we do math drills and a lot of interactive math lessons. The sleeves and markers will also carry over to our phonics lessons. The earbuds are to replace broken headphones that are over six years old. We do use technology in the classroom for our assessments, typing club, and for some Math lessons. We would like each student to be able to have their own earbuds so that they don't have to share worn out headphones (also for sanitary reasons).
The crayons, glue sticks, card stock, scissors, staplers, and pencil holders are to replace some very, very, very well-loved supplies that are worn out, broken, lost, or already used up.
