Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried to fix a leaky faucet without the proper tools? Or complete a do-it-yourself at home project without the right supplies? Well, I am trying to help educate my students but I don't have the proper school supplies that are needed in order for them to be academically successful!
This year my District's budget was over 19 million underfunded.
So what, of course, was cut????? SUPPLIES - the very core of what I think is essential to teach my students and help them become academically successful. My students are working at a disadvantage in many ways. They live in an area that is socio-economically depressed. Companies have closed down or downsized their workforce. That translates into a large amount of people having their hours drastically cut or worse yet, eliminated. These people are the parents of my students. They are now in a difficult position where they must choose whether they buy everyday school supplies or food for their tables. I have bought some of the supplies they need, as well, but I am unable to purchase everything they need. So we are trying to make due with what supplies we have. But it is not an optimum situation. While everyone should be mindful of spending, there are some items that are required to aid the learning process.
My Project
All students need notebooks. These items are essential in keeping students work in one place. Organization - all math work is done in a math notebook, reading in their reading notebook. At this moment, we are using the back of old papers - not easily kept in order. Our collective ability to keep these papers out of the trash seems nearly impossible. How are they going to be able to study their math concepts, or write their spelling sentences, all the while trying to keep them in a safe place, without having a notebook?? Unfortunately, the answer is that they cannot. Our school did not get a supply of composition writing paper this year. NONE!!!!! How do I teach the essentials of writing a personal narrative without writing paper. It is hard to write on unlined paper - so we draw lines. This becomes a distraction in itself, as well as a huge waste of valuable education time. And colored pencils are key to unlocking the creativity that is within each and every one of my students.
In a perfect world, everyone would have the same advantages and disadvantages.
I just want to level the playing field for my students. These children have been plagued by living in circumstances that are beyond their control. All I want to do is help them reach the potential that I know is in every single one of them. Everyone should be given the opportunities that they deserve. Help me give them a boost by providing them with the important supplies needed to becoming lifelong learners!!!
