This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is has a high poverty rate and a very diverse population. This year we have 100% free breakfast and lunch through a grant. Lots of these students enter the classroom daily with limited school supplies due to financial restraints.
My class is full of 20 energetic, eager to learn, 4th graders.
Many of my students come from single parent, low income homes. I never let my students use this as an excuse for learning. Although they sometimes feel like the world is against them, they are ready to learn as much as they can each day.
My Project
Having the necessary school supplies promotes learning, boosts self-esteem, and helps keep kids in school. Students need pencils and paper to be able to take notes, work out problems, and write down ideas. Colored pencils are very important because students can have visuals for math and express themselves creatively.
Financially strapped families often struggle with how they will be able to purchase all the necessary supplies.
Lower income kids have many hurdles to overcome. Working hard and staying in school offer a glimmer of hope for a better future. But, staying in school is difficult if you don't have the right supplies. Many of my students already feel out of place, and showing up without the proper supplies just makes them feel worse. Some feel like they just don't have what it takes to succeed in school and they want to give up.
