Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, I will have a class of 15 rambunctious boys and 5 girls. I work in a small, rural Hispanic town in northern New Mexico. I had the pleasure of teaching these students 30 minutes daily when they were in Kindergarten, so I can tell you that they enjoy learning, especially hands-on learning, and learning that involves singing, dancing and movement. They are all unique, and each brings their own learning style and needs to the classroom.
Most of my students live in poverty, and can’t provide their own school supplies.
Last year we spent a lot of time figuring out how to share the crayons and glue sticks that I had in the classroom. They had a very positive attitude about sharing, and never complained about this. Sharing and making do is what they are used to.
My Project
Number Lines for my students’ desks, Fact Family Boards, & Magnetic Rainbow Fraction Tiles will enable my students do hands-on math and improve their math skills. The glue will allow them to do art projects and interactive notebook activities, which increase their engagement in learning.
I make a lot of my own games for reading and math, and I need laminating sheets to make them stronger and make them last.
I’m doing a project on Skippyjon Jones books this year, and need to expand my collection of stories for my students.
And for some inexplicable reason, we always run out of brown crayons!
