This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 30 bright-eyed, energetic, 6 and 7-year-olds, from the south side of Chicago, who are eager to learn, explore, and have a place to belong. They are full of potential, but need the right tools to realize all of it.
They come from tough circumstances, but every day they come to school smiling and excited about what the day has in store.
Their smiles and perpetual optimism inspire me to work harder, make fewer excuses, and give them the good start they deserve in school.
My Project
We need to restock our classroom supply of the basics: dry erase markers, colored paper, glue sticks, wipes, paper towels, and the like. It’s not a glamorous request, but these are the essential tools that keep our classroom running day in and day out, and they are always in need of replenishment!
We use the markers every day to practice spelling and math without wasting so much paper.
They're also much bolder and easier to see than pencil and paper, so they make it much easier for me to see students' work with a quick glance around the room and offer immediate corrections or feedback. With pencil and paper, I can see only the few students I am closest to and most feedback has to come a day later, after everything has been turned in, looked over, and returned.
We also use the glue sticks and colored paper every day; students use them during literacy and math centers to sort words and number sentences based on patterns they find. Also, of course, the wipes and paper towels help keep the classroom neat and clean!
