Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in San Francisco. I teach in the Newcomer pathway and we have about 100 students who have recently immigrated to the U.S. from many different countries and are learning English for the first time. Seeing my kids grow in their language skills and confidence is a truly joyful experience.
But I worry about them every day because I know that they are at a disadvantage.
My students mostly come from low-income families who, especially given the pandemic, don’t have extra money to spend on the school supplies that we are normally able to provide in the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting materials to make school supply kits for my students. School is happening online this year, and many of my students don’t have the materials they need at home to be successful in school. When kids are first learning English, it’s important for them to have practice physically writing, so they need notebooks, pens, erasers, and more.
To fully be able to access their learning, my students need basic school supplies.
Learning during a pandemic shouldn't be only for kids who can afford materials, and my kids need materials to learn. Please consider helping our class!
