Help me give my students the basic school supplies (pencils, markers, facial tissue) and that they need in math class every day. We don't want them to have to worry about whether or not they have a pencil!
The students that I work with come to school every day ready and eager to learn. They come from low income families and most spend up to 2 hours on 2 different buses to get to school each day. The school that I teach at is an all boys middle school and we teach 9 core values for the course of their 3 year stay with us. Their goal by the time they leave my school is to become a man of responsibility, respect, honesty, integrity, confidence, perseverance, courtesy, good judgement and good sportsmanship. While we strive to help these boys become men of distinction, I want them to be able to focus on their studies.
I don't want them to have to worry about supplies or how they are going to get them, so providing basic classroom items takes one small stress off of their daily plate.
My Project
Many of my students come from low income families and spend up to 2 hours traveling one way to get to school each day. They have more important things to worry about than where they are going to get a pencil. If I can provide my students with a pencil and other basic school supplies, that will help to take one small stress away from them.
Pencils aren't expensive if you're just buying a few, but when you're buying pencils for an entire class of students, it can really add up!
My students are so thankful when they can come into the room and just grab a pencil out of the class pencil drawer and get started on their work.
