My students need items such as pencils, erasers, sharpeners, bracelets, keychains, and other supplies that will be stored in our school store and offered as rewards.
We are a brand new middle school in Jamaica, Queens. Our school was opened to help the overcrowding in schools within the district. Our vision has been to provide our students with rigorous instruction, while supporting their social and emotional needs by creating a strong positive community.
Our student population is struggling not just academically, but socially and emotionally.
They struggle with making the right decisions and acting in an appropriate way. They have extremely low self esteem and this challenge affects their academics. As teachers, we cannot deliver effective instruction when their behavioral needs are not being met. Punishment and revoking privileges is not the answer. The students are not responding to this type of system, and this is not the environment we want to create. We want to encourage students to make the right choices and build their self esteem by rewarding them when they are doing the right thing.
My Project
These items will impact my students in a positive way. They are used to being punished and having things taken away from them as a way to change their behavior. However, this system has not been effective and our students cannot be successful without being taught the correct way to behave. By rewarding their positive behavior, instead of punishing for negative behavior, we are hoping that we will see huge results in our students. We are looking to build their esteem and reward them for when they are doing the right thing. We hope by giving them the tools to be successful and then encouraging them to use these tools, their behavior will change and that will impact their academics. These materials are small tokens that we can give our students to show we care and support them.
Any donation will help my school to create a school store where all students can work for the opportunity to shop.
My students will feel great about themselves when they earn rewards and hopefully will continue to make the right choices in every aspect of their lives.
