Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Finally!!!! Our new principal is in support of our school having a student council in order to build a sense of community, school spirit, and establish a government. In the last four years my school has been through seven principals. I believe that the current principal wants to improve our school by giving back a sense of responsibility to the students.
I teach 8th grade English in the Bronx and am head of student council. My school is Title 1, and is now called an Impact School. Last year it was one of Bloomberg's Dirty Dozen because of safety issues. 95% of our students have failed the NYC state exam. This is mostly due to the outrageous number of classroom disruptions and a lack of consequences. The gangs are now recruiting our 7th and 8th graders right outside the school at 3:00.
This is the first year we will have a student council. So far, students have brainstormed ways to raise money for new books and equipment. They also want to have school spirit competitions among the classes and to start a continental congress to create rules and procedures for their class mates.
I am asking for a colored printer in the student council office so that we can make posters, fliers, and notices about our upcoming events. I want students to create these banners, print them off, and then plaster the school with announcements about the events.
This is the first year students will have rewards to look forward to. For the first time they will have school dances, sports teams, movie night, culture day, art fairs, and other exciting events that help middle school kids develop not only as students but as responsible students. A printer is necessary for the student council members to communicate to the rest of the student body. I have asked the school to give me a laptop in the classroom, but they cannot yet get me a printer. Currently I am running around the school looking for an available printer. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
