Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Future Readiness Program (FRP) with students with low cognitive, and behavior skills in grades Kindergarten to sixth grade at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic area of Apache Junction, Arizona. My students struggle in the areas of social emotional awareness, daily living skills and communication as well as academic skills. All of my students have attention and sensory sensitivities that require many different tools to calm down and de-escalate when they become upset.
Despite these challenges, my students work through these the best they can to reach their goals and dreams.
These amazing kids are eager to learn new things academically and about themselves. They are bright and can be successful when provided the correct tools. I believe in my students, and I want them to believe in themselves as well as know they are loved and supported in our school community.
My Project
The materials I have requested are sensory tools that each the students at my school need. These tools will give my students the opportunities to be successful in the classroom by fulfilling their sensory needs.
Your generous donation to our project will provide the sensory tools to help my students learn to self- regulate their behaviors so that they can be successful in school and reach their goals.
The light filters will help set a relaxing atmosphere for learning. These lights will be helpful for students who are sensitive to light. When in the sensory room, it is important for students to have different activities. The touch lights will give my students with touch sensory needs another opportunity to calm down before working on academic work. For my students with pressure sensory needs, the vibrating pillows will be helpful and give them a soothing sensation.
Most of my students need different forms of movement breaks to help them calm down or get ready to complete work. The trampoline will help those students who need to bounce. The stepping stones will help students move but also calm down by providing them a way to focus their mind. When students are frustrated during work time, it is important to have a safe and calm place. To create this, I need different sensory materials so that I can meet all the sensory needs in our school. When students are frustrated and having a hard time regulating, it is important to give them safe options to calm down.
