Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is one of thirteen elementary schools in Danbury, Connecticut. Danbury is a very diverse community which is reflected in our school and the inner city neighborhood in which we are located. Morris Street is a Title 1 school with almost 90% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunch and considered economically disadvantaged. Additionally, over 50% of the student population comprises families that speak English as a second language or not at all.
Many of these students lack the appropriate social skills to engage with their peers.
I have found in the past few years that the use of technology with these children has the ability to help bridge this gap. These students love coming to school each day and see it as their "safe place". I am here to help support these children's needs and assist them in anyway possible.
My Project
My students will be using this tablet to help them access apps that will help model many of the appropriate behaviors that are necessary to navigate the social work of the school environment. Many of my students have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, as well as many other contributing factors. I feel it is important to provide the opportunity for a multi-sensory approach when it comes to seeing what works for a child. Each is different and as a result, learns differently. Being able to offer the option of technology will be an absolute game changer to these students.
