My students need basic school supplies that are not provided to low-income schools. And unfortunately my students cannot afford some things, and as a teacher, I cannot afford certain things as well.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an urban school district in Philadelphia. I teach Special Education English to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. My kids are accustomed to trauma and because of that, certain behaviors tend to trickle into my classroom. The norms tend to be cutting class, coming to class late, wearing headphones, and using phones in class.
What I have noticed about them is that they think they are not worthy of certain things, like going to college.
My project is designed to expose them to college tours so they can see what it's like to go to college and potentially expose them to the idea that they can go to college.
My Project
This project will make a huge difference for my day-to-day in school. Basic supplies that my kids need they don't have access to. Pencils and printing paper will help me create work that the kids can do in class. Hand sanitize, wipes and spray will help eliminate a lot of the germs that kids bring in to school and keep everyone healthy, safe and clean. The bands around the desk will help my kids stay focused because a lot of them deal with ADHD.
Underfunded schools lack basic necessities.
With donations, it will allow my children to have access to things to help their mind and bodies, which in turn will create high self-esteem which will increase academic excellence.
