My students need a Bingo machine for after school activities to help ensure that we can teach safe and social engagement to many of our students who lack a supervised, healthy place to be.
I am a teacher at an urban high school. Over half of our students come from families that are struggling to make ends meet. Most families in our community value education and want to see their children succeed in school. We have a number of families that are working poor. Both parents are working and sometimes working more than one job each.
Resources for working poor families do not increase as their students age.
Most students find very little help obtaining school supplies at a high school level. Many high school students are caring for their younger siblings after school making getting a job difficult as they are expected to be at home.
All our students want to learn and graduate. Removing as many barriers as we can to help them succeed is critical. Ensuring students have basic academic needs met will help ensure their attendance remains good and they continue to grow as a lifetime learner.
My Project
There are very few places that offer teenagers a safe environment that is supervised and structured in the afternoons after school. I run after school activities to help connect students to school through clubs, activities and teacher lead learning and leadership opportunities.
Students have been proven to perform better academically when they feel as if their school is a place that they belong.
A real sense of belonging to our school community keeps our students returning to school every day. The more attached to the school they are socially, the better their attendance is, which increases their likelihood of graduating on time. While engaging in after school activities, students meet new friends, gain leadership skills by running activities, and spend time with responsible adult role models.
A Bingo machine provides a fun activity that students can organize events and activities around for our school. Students would need to organize the activity, advertise the events and under the supervision of teachers, and run the after school event for their peers. It requires students to plan, prepare, learn organizational skills, become better communicators and take on responsibility. All skills that translate into classroom readiness and academic success.
