Our school is nestled in the countryside of Wade, North Carolina. We are outside of the military base and have many military families at our school which adds to the cultural diversity and uniqueness of our school population.
We are a small rural Title I school outside of the military base, Fort Bragg, in which many students are dependent on free and reduced-price lunch and breakfast here at school.
Our school is more of a family and has a strong community feeling of love and support and inclusion. We incorporate many different learning strategies, group and collaborative work, and independent studies at our school. We have begun a “steam” lab at our school and are working to develop their problem-solving skills and collaborative work skills through the design process. They really are an incredible group of kids who are excited to learn and push themselves daily.
My Project
This project will allow me to create a space at school in which the focus is on a student’s emotional well being.
With the uncertainty going on around us, I feel much more obligated to provide a safe and supportive environment for our students.
These couches can be placed together so that students can face each other and encourage them to talk, listen, and be heard by their peers. It also can be rearranged to have quiet, personal space for individuals who just need a little break from the chaos and stimulus around them. In a time and world in which so much seems out of our control, creating a calming and supportive school environment is one thing I can do to focus on the whole child, and make sure their emotional and physical needs are being met.
