My Students
I am a school counselor responsible for the largest, Title I poverty level elementary school in the district. The student to counselor ratio is 500:1.
Behavioral problems are a constant concern in my elementary school.
I serve farming and military families, foster and homeless families, and families coping with mental health conditions and/or developmental/physical limitations. I need intrinsic ways to reach my students. Professional development opportunities aren't readily available for school counselors in my area. Nonetheless, I am required to meet state standards for helping my students with social, academic, career and mental health needs.
My Project
It's been 2 years since a student attack resulted in 5 procedures on my rotator cuff. I have limited mobility and am in constant pain. Elementary schools aren't equipped for the behavior problems we currently have. I need books to gain new knowledge on what is happening in the minds of our children and how to help teachers with strategies in the classroom. Teachers can't teach due to so many behavioral concerns. The time for hoping things change is over. Action is required. I need resources to be able to implement 21st century comprehensive school counseling strategies to help our ever changing students.
