Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Science is boring." "Science is hard." These are common sentiments of high school students. But it does not have to be. Science is FUN. It can be challenging but with proper materials and rewarding projects it will make students engaged, motivated, and prepare them for a brighter future.
My students attend a high-needs high school in an urban setting.
Most of them have limited experiences. And often the positive life experiences are over-shadowed by the harsh reality of urban life. They have had to grow up way too fast. For many of them, it is school that provides them the sanctuary and incentive they need to succeed in life. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and need a variety of support services. The differences range in academic, cultural, and social abilities. Many of my students are underachievers. Excuses range from majority of them being English Language Learners, newcomers to USA, inability to read and write, trouble interacting with others, etc. However, I believe we can overcome these excuses. These students are willing and motivated. With proper guidance, resources, and opportunities they will succeed.
My Project
My students need these materials: document camera, calculators, binders, and scissors.
These materials will help actively engage students in challenging Science classes. All the materials will be reused in sustainable class projects over many years. The document camera will allow the whole class to visually learn Science especially in dissections. Equity is important to me. Therefore each student needs their own calculator, binder, and scissors. These materials will help students learn Science efficiently, organize their notes, and motivate them to learn.
This year in my Science classes I will have a huge semester long garden project. Students will learn to grow and harvest crops while learning about Science in a hands-on method with numerous experiments and activities.
I believe every student can and wants to succeed.
With your support, we can give our students the opportunities to make their lives better. Even these urban city students will enjoy learning Science and will become life long learners. This garden project is practical and motivating to all students. I already have many community resources willing to help in this project. This is because we all value education and realize that our most treasured resource in life is our children. Thank you.
