Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in an urban area. Most the students that we serve, come from low income families. With this in mind, students don't get to have access to fresh produce or even no first hand what it means to grow my own food. They consume high amounts of processed foods which prevents them from getting nutrient foods. Some students only meals are the meals that we provide at the school.
My goal is to create a school garden that:
Encourages kids to try new fruits and vegetables
• Prevents childhood obesity
• Promotes physical activity
• Encourages healthy eating habits
• Increase students’ science achievement scores
• Improves social skills by cultivating empathy and teamwork
• Improves emotional literacy
• Develops a sense of community and responsibility
• Connects children to the environment and instills lifelong appreciation for the natural world.
With your help we can change the lives of so many students and their families!
My Project
My goal is to use the garden to teach good nutritional values, help promote a sense of community and responsibility among my students.
Students will be using these materials to help build and cultivate the school garden.
We will use the garden tools to dig soil and create a new layout for the garden so that it is more appealing and attracts the attention of other students, so that they too will want to work in the garden. The compost bin will be used to make make nutrient compost that will grow more healthy plants along with the plant food!
The seeds are very important because it will allow the students to plant a variety of fruits and vegetables that they may not get in their everyday life. We will use the gallon totes and planters to plant and grow the seeds.
