This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is classified as Title I and nestled on the edge of a Food Desert (with some of our population actually residing in those areas). While most of their families are considered, "low-income," they are inquisitive about exploring skills and careers that can "actually" relate to them as an adolescent living in an impoverished community.
My students are excited when they are able to make a real connection between learning activities and life.
This year, our exploratory activities include budgeting for a farmers' market, calculating the vegetation yields, growing vegetation from seeds, creating a lemonade stand, and even helping parents choose better options when grocery shopping.
Its always a great experience when students, parents and teachers come back to inform me that one of my learners has taught or shown business techniques outside of our classroom. For instance, a student was able to quickly assess the costs of their groceries by understanding unit costs.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in learning because they will provide a hands-on opportunity in their home during this pandemic. Working alongside the NC Cooperative Extension, students will be provided with seed kits and materials to help them get started in their indoor/outdoor garden.
As they plant, plan, calculate, design, and promote their products, they grow socially, academically, and personally.
Our school community will also benefit by utilizing the many disciplines that are encountered when creating a school farmers' market.
With a large percentage of our student population qualifying for free or reduced-price meals, the farmer's market can provide our low-income community with the opportunity to purchase fresh produce, from our students who have learned the financial aspect of maintaining and running a business venture.
