My students come from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We often talk about what makes us different like the food we eat, the holidays we celebrate, the color of our skin, and our religion. My students are bright and are eager to learn. Many students in my class live in poverty or close to it.
Each day, we meet for a morning meeting to read the morning message, do the calendar, wish students back who were absent, go over the schedule, and discuss any issues or celebrations we have.
For each subject, we meet at the carpet area to learn and then the students head back to their seats or move around the room in order to complete their assignments.
The carpet area is the meeting area for morning meeting, reader's workshop, writer's workshop, math, science, and social studies. It is also a place in which we gather to have a family meeting if there is an issue that needs to be discussed. The carpet is used for students to silently read and write on, along with working in groups. Having a carpet with colored squares allows for students to know where they will be sitting. Many times it is easier for students to be assigned seats at the carpet. Having specific colored areas will be helpful with this organization.
