Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My classroom is special because I am the school counselor and I teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills lessons. My students and I practice ways to show empathy and prevent bullying in our school. I get excited when the light bulb goes off, when my students, Pre K-5th grade master the art of empathy. We talk about placing yourself in someone else shoes to see how they might feel if you hurt them physically or emotionally. My goal is for all students to have a caring attitude.

My Project

This conference will increase my understanding of mental health issues that children deal with. It will also give me strategies to use when working with students. It will help me support students mental growth so that they can also succeed academically. I will use the strategies given to promote mental well being not only in my class but in all subject areas. I will represent the strategies to my faculty and staff. I will also teach students techniques that they can put in place when they find themselves in stressful or tough situations. My students will be more confident once they better understand what is going on with them and also knowing that they have help and support along the way.
