Help me give my students Mo Willems books to read and reinforce their reading skills while students are isolated from friends and classmates during the coronavirus shutdown.
I am a Reading Interventionist in a Title I school with pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade in Wisconsin. I work with 25 students who need additional support in order to strengthen their current reading skills. My students are currently performing below grade level, and require intensive instruction based on their individual needs and learning styles. Our school is made up of students from different socio-economic backgrounds in a rural community. In our district, more than half of the population participates in the free and reduced lunch program and has a free universal breakfast program for all students.
Reading is the best way to take a journey when schools close and you're at home.
My students need books during the current school closure in order to continue to apply decoding strategies and interact with stories in an effort to maintain their current reading skills. I am constantly searching for ways to support my student and to incorporate the best possible supports to meet their needs.
My Project
Our school is one of many that has been closed due to the coronavirus outbreak requiring my students to continue their learning at home. Many of my students do not have access to books while at home, are unable to use the school library, and the local library is closed too. Because of the current situation, I would like to provide my students with a couple of high interest books that will allow them to continue to strengthen their current reading skills and simply make the choice to enjoy reading a good book.
Students will not only read the texts, but engage in extension activities such as watching Mo Willems: Lunch Doodles on YouTube to understand the process of illustrating a book, create their own doodles, write their own stories using the same characters, plant seeds at home, and understand life cycles.
These books will no doubt be a valuable resource to help my students take an active role in their learning process, as they extend their thinking, as well as strengthen their reading accuracy and fluency as student reread the stories.
I'm confident these books will bring students a bit of happiness while providing opportunities to read and write until we return to school whether that is next month or next year. Every donation will help put these books into the hands of my students.
