My students are a curious group of children. Living in NYC, there's a lot to be curious about and explore. But even coming from a large city, many of my students have had limited experiences.
I believe the role of the art teacher is to give the students an experience.
What is the role of the artist? They believe it's just painting and drawing but I want them to know there is much more to art. My students are open to learning new things and to different experiences within visual art. Because of this amazing attitude, I have the freedom to teach them anything.
Most of my students have taken maybe one or two art classes in their lives and have pretty much used basic or student-quality art materials. Their experience is limited to using tempera paint or watercolor with plastic brushes.
A part of my philosophy of teaching is giving students an experience.
This year, they are going to be a part of a large-scale project where they will have the opportunity to finally use artist-quality paints and tools. I want them to have a chance to touch, feel, and use paints that are similar in quality to what professionals use. For the students, art-making becomes so much more special.
