I teach in a low-income, very small city surrounded by Detroit, where students' needs extend beyond learning to read. In addition to feeding hungry bellies breakfast, lunch and snack, we feed them love, acceptance, social skills and positive behavior with a hands-on, student-led education! Our district is one of the poorest in the nation, and we struggle to come up with furniture and "extras."
I have the best students!
Our school is very diverse, containing mostly Bengali, African-American, Yemeni, White, Polish and Bosnian children, many of whom do not speak English at home. They are creative, loving and enthusiastic hard workers!
My Project
At school, we organize subjects by color. Red is Math. Blue is Reading. Yellow is writing. Green is Science. Purple is Social Studies. We have notebooks and folders in each color for each subject, and we take notes and journal in our notebooks, while organizing loose papers and worksheets into folders. We keep our scissors, glue sticks, and pencils in boxes in our desks or crates under our tables so they don't get lost.
Many of my students were unable to purchase the beginning of year school supply list, and the school was only able to provide so much.
The school provides locker locks, glue sticks, looseleaf, coloring supplies, pencils, band aids, and Kleenex. We were given a limited supply of notebooks, folders, and backpacks. We need more, please! Without notebooks, my remaining students have not been able to write about their reading and take notes in Reading Workshop, write in Writing Workshop, or take notes in other subjects. They have been doing their work on looseleaf paper, which has been getting lost without folders to keep them in. We need notebooks and folders to organize these students, with notebooks and folders for each subject. We need chart paper and post-it notes for note-taking and group writing. Please help us get these basic items to organize my students and help them with their learning!
