Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is grades 3 to 5 Life Skills. It serves students with intellectual disabilities. My students range from verbal and having average fine motor skills to nonverbal and unable to use traditional tools like pencils or scissors.
Some of my students are working on traditional academic skills.
Some are learning functional skills and basic job skills. Some students are able to spend time in the regular classroom. I work in a large urban school district where most students live below the poverty line.
My Project
As a Life Skills classroom, part of our curriculum is real world skills such as self-care and job skills. We cook, bake, and wash dishes in the classroom. I want to extend our job skills to other areas of business. I plan to have the students run a coffee shop in which we will sell coffee/tea/hot chocolate to the teachers. We will use reusable cups to minimize the impact of single use plastic waste. Students will be in charge of reading orders, keeping a cash drawer and making change, fulfilling orders, delivery, and clean up. Students will learn valuable job skills. Additionally, the fundraising opportunity would allow us fund other parts of our program, such as cooking and allowing us to make future purchases to explore other careers depending on student interest.
