I teach 14-22-year-old students with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our high school's Exceptional Education program. My students are focusing on life and work skills that will prepare them for their post-high school goals of being employed and living independently. My students need to learn how to communicate, and work with others in a social/collaborative environment. Many of them will need supported employment, so they need to start working on job, social, and communication skills doing activities that mirror what they may do post high-school.
My Project
Students who will use these resources are in our Exceptional Education Program. They will use these resources to create a school based enterprise where they will create a business, survey their potential customers to determine preferences, and create items to be sold in our coffee shop and student gift shops.
These items will allow students to utilize academic skills (math calculations, writing, and job skills) and socials skills (interpersonal communication) to practice real world application of concepts taught in their occupational courses.
The coffee maker will be used in our coffee shop where the students will make and sell coffee. The students will use the craft items to decorate and sell customized picture frames and jewelry in the student created gift shop.
