My Students

Help students learn real world vocational skills! That is the goal of our student run on-campus coffee shop, which has become increasingly popular and in-demand since we opened for business in 2010.

My students have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and Autism and attend a separate school in North Carolina.

My students love to learn vocational skills and, even more, enjoy when they are able to complete tasks independently. The coffee shop has provided the students with the ability to learn customer service skills and the skill of delivering a service and working with money. The students would not have an opportunity to learn these skills outside of the school setting.

My Project

The coffee, tea, and filters will help our students to run a successful school-based enterprise by providing them with the resources to provide the customers (school staff) with a product they have come to expect and enjoy. Many students have requested to work at this site and like to remain on-campus to deliver coffee and interact with staff! The resources will help the students to continue to interact with the staff, develop customer service skills, and will help them to develop and practice vocational skills that will help when they can engage in off-campus work activities. The materials will provide a concrete and meaningful measure to determine if they are performing well on their job duties. This job also helps the students to learn and practice social skills. The job also helps them learn how to interact appropriately with adults.

This project will help my students to expand customer product offerings and will help them engage in a simple applied economics activity for which my students need a great deal of support to learn.

These are skills many people take for granted and our students require explicit practice to learn. The materials will help provide a real world applied activity to help prepare my students for vocational activities out side of the school setting.
