Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In mid-March, our school district was told that schools were being closed due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. My students live in a bustling part of the city and come from diverse families, with varying needs. I didn't yet know that this would be our last day of Pre-K this year!

I began my new "distance learning" teaching by creating an online learning platform for my Pre-K students and their families to use at home.

I thought it was most important to be as creative as possible planning activities that would provide social interaction, communication, and Social-Emotional support for my young learners. Weekly phone calls to students and Zoom meetings were scheduled to try and give them some sense of normalcy.

I continued with engaging lessons, loving support, and some fun during this confusing time for kids. My hopes are to continue to provide consistency and love. I know that nothing can compare to the learning and relationship building that has been done in the classroom, but I am determined to help students still feel connected.

My Project

The materials I chose for assisting with my teaching at home will allow me to prepare lessons to engage children virtually. I will be able to print and laminate visuals such as vocabulary pictures that go along with the stories I have chosen.

For the next five weeks, my Pre-K students will be engaged in on-line learning about Things that Grow from their homes!

Although they are at home, they will still be able to listen to stories that I will read to them via video recordings and Zoom. I will be able to draw pictures and record student ideas on chart paper as they share out during our planned small group Zooms! I will also be able to print out and use materials for daily Morning Meetings on Zoom to get students ready for their day!

I can build their comprehension skills and answer their questions to help them in literacy. My students will be working from home, but still will be able to participate in one of our favorite classroom times, Story Time!
