The students at the middle school I work at come from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds. 25% of them are English Language Learners. Close to 60% of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. There are more than 25 different languages spoken in the homes of the students who come to school here. Many students come from homes with a parent who did not graduate from high school, and most students come from homes with parents who do not hold an advanced degree. Despite many having struggles at home, they come to school willing to learn in hopes of enjoying a better future.
My Project
Scholastic Action! is a magazine that gives students engaging stories about current topics. My reading help class is full of students who want to know more about what is going on in the world around them, but their reading levels make it challenging for them to read newspapers and other online sources. This online magazine is written for readers in the third to fifth grade range, making it a perfect match to the kids in my class. As all students have been issued Chromebooks this year, this can easily be accessed remotely. Through reading these engaging articles and completing assignments based on them kids will further their own reading abilities, develop critical thinking and analytical skills, and better understand how they can make a difference in their world.
