Our school is comprised of almost 300 students. My students represent a diverse population from all across the capital city. The school district has a low-income rate of over 60%, as well as a mobility rate of more than 30%. Our children struggle with daily barriers including poverty, social/emotional demands, special needs, and trauma. We do not receive Title I funding so most of our classroom supplies and resources must come from donations and fundraising.
My students are the most fragile learners in our school building, who require additional supports to help them succeed.
In order to meet their potential, these students with special needs require the regular education curriculum be adapted and supplemented. My students should not be limited by their disabilities. Instead, they should flourish in their education as their teachers focus on supporting their ABILITIES!
My Project
Many of my students have few real world experiences, and are therefore at a disadvantage when it comes to vocabulary and world knowledge. By providing them with Storyworks Jr and Scholastic News magazines, they will learn about current events and be able to share new learning with peers. This power of knowledge will provide my students with confidence they often lack.
Students will be able to take their Scholastic magazines home to practice their speech-language goals outside of school, promoting carry-over of skills and promoting success!
Home learning materials are essential for progress, yet my students lack these resources. The children will be able to read aloud their magazines to family members while targeting all areas of speech/language: comprehension, vocabulary, language expression, social skills, and articulation.
