Scholastic StoryWorks: Works to Make Students Excited About Reading!
My students need engaging, rigorous content in order to practice valuable reading skills such as summarizing, notetaking, and interpreting information.
My fourth grade students come from various ethnic, socioeconomic, and familial backgrounds. Some of them have ample access to books and opportunities to read outside of school, while many have very little.
All of my students are capable of being lifelong readers when given the proper tools and opportunities.
My students enter class with mixed attitudes towards reading. While some always have a book in their hand, others won't pick up a book for anything! I want to be able to change that.
My Project
Scholastic StoryWorks is a multi-genre classroom magazine. It includes stories, current events articles, plays, and historical fiction reading for my students. In addition, Scholastic provides numerous online instructional materials, videos, slide shows, and games to accompany the content in the publication. For example, if students read a Greek play, there is a slide show that accompanies the play to help build background knowledge and illustrate difficult vocabulary.
Students eagerly await the monthly delivery of Scholastic StoryWorks and read it from cover to cover.
The bright glossy photos and illustrations along with the many text features help grab their attention. Students also love StoryWorks, because they get their own copy they can highlight in, take notes in, and eventually keep for themselves to take home. It's a wonderful resource that will engage even the most reluctant readers.
Scholastic StoryWorks also provides me with additional instructional resources such as assessments, worksheets, and graphic organizers to help me teach students important reading AND writing skills. This is such a valuable resource!
