My Students

When I look at my roster, I see the story of every student. My students' stories are varied, and some are not so positive. For many of my students their lives are in constant flux--many of their home lives are not good. They want for the most basic of needs. School is their refuge. Every day, I strive to provide my students with what they need.

My kids come to me with a need for structure, and a hunger for learning.

My first priority is to meet the need of every student. We establish a welcoming, nurturing environment. My kids know that our school is a place where they are taken care of and safe.

My Project

One of the challenges of teaching reading is finding stories and articles that students can find interest in and hold their attention. Scholastic Storyworks magazine does both of these and much more.

Storyworks exposes my students to a variety of different current and historical events, such as the refugee crises, war in Syria, the need for clean drinking water, WWII, and much more.

The magazine also gives us access to complex fictional texts that illustrate events and activities that may affect students at this age, along with relevant debates, poems, and grammar lessons. Students do not want to put them down!

Each addition gives us even more to discuss and talk about. Students get excited when the issues arrive and are ready to learn more. Not only does Scholastic Storyworks allow my students to become more engaged readers, it also helps them become viable parts of our global community.
