We need more hands on activities to promote active learning in our stations.

I teach Spectacular Sophomores who will succeed in graduating in 2021. We have 5 classes of US History students who would appreciate being engaged in stations that have newsworthy events. Having a station that can give them scholastic news on a monthly basis will show them how our world has so many events occurring. This will hopefully stimulate them to become activists and lifelong learners to better our global society. Understanding the economic, social and political factors in connection to our world is pivotal.
Student Led Stations are possible this year in our classroom because we have a co-teaching situation for the first time ever. We already launched one student led as well as teacher facilitated activity. Now our goal is to have at least 9 more woven in the instruction this year. Having these magazines will give students a hands on experience with literacy and discussion amongst their peer related groups.
We would like to know more about world events. Small group discussions will help us work out current issues. Magazines have information that can be viewed without some of the distractions technology brings. New opportunities to learn from outside sources should be fun and lets us have time to read and think.
What is cool about the station classroom set up is we are taking ownership of the learning. Mrs. Hardaway and Ms. Morgan walk around and guide us, but we take on the roles of educators. With peer influence we hope to make it more engaging and take ownership of our class.
Too many of us don’t try to learn about current issues outside of our own friendship circles. This project will push us to talk about issues bigger than just our lives and see the world events. Hopefully it makes us more active in matters around where we live. It solves us from being unaware of political events.
