Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn". In our class, students are engaged in their learning and are aware of their objectives. Scope Magazines teaches necessary skills through interactive tasks, and offers a variety of resources.
Our students live in a low income community, and attend one of the largest K-8 elementary schools in the district.
The sixth grade is full of motivated learners of all different abilities. Nearly 13% of our students receive Special Services in an Inclusive setting, and our learners are very diverse. Our school strives to meet the individual needs of all types of learners in order to prepare them for higher education. By following CCSS, using creative and interactive lessons, students at our school are able to take charge of their own learning. With the use of Google Chromebooks, they would be able to access Scope Magazine articles at home, enabling them to practice and reinforce the skills learned in class.
My Project
Teaching with Scope Magazine would address the following skills: close reading, vocabulary, grammar, and debates while offering differentiated instruction. With a different set of tasks and activities provided to each learner based on his or her needs, our students will be able to comfortably discuss their points while defending themselves with evidence from the texts. They will learn how to analyze arguments, identify an author’s claim, and reflect and make connections to their own lives. Scope Magazine also includes adaptations of classical and non-fiction works into dramatic scenes that the students can read and perform. Thus giving them an opportunity to experience empathy, promote their public speaking, and improve their reading fluency.
With resources that are readily available and student-centered, it gives the teacher(s) more time to asses each learner, and gives the students a broader knowledge of what it means to be well-rounded.
Having access to so many stories, articles, and media will enrich our students’ learning experience by putting them in the driver’s seat.
