My student need Scholastic News as an information source in developing reading skills. My students also need a stapler and hole punch help create a resource folder for school and home.

Our day begins with whole group instruction followed by small group or center work, so I can help reach all students no matter learning level. I'd like to see my students gain 8 months plus in reading and science. They're behind because of lack of early learning. "I do my best and that is success"
My students come from low income areas in a single parent households along with 3 to 4 siblings.
I also find many students being raised by grandparents as well. The are eager to learn but seem to be at least 6 to 8 months below grade level. This is due to lack of sources for preschool, materials and help at home. Our school tries to provide supplies and technology for students at school but many don't have these resources at home to continue the learning there. We provide tutoring and other after-school programs, but it still not enough. Our staff is very giving and caring trying to do whatever possible for the students. This still isn't enough to help with all their academic and family needs.
The students would use the Scholastic News and Science News in class to increase knowledge of events taking place in the world. The science newsletter will help peak their interest into a variety of topics. This would help them prepare for the science part of the 4th grade testing. I also want them to take the newsletters home to read and review with their parents/guardians/siblings as a way to increase family participation in the child's education. In class we will also use the newsletter to do further research on topics to promote use of technology and finding important details to support their learning. Also, to increase their writing and oral skills to create a brief summary of the current news or science related theme.
Most of all I want this project to open them up to variety of topics that may just spark their interest to learn more.
Thus developing their reading and science knowledge base helping them close the grade level gap. Also to help provide materials at home for the children to share with during important family time.
